Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) Any of a number of diseases that arise when the body’s immune system is compromised by HIV.
Chlamydia A sexually transmitted disease, caused by a bacterial infection, that can cause significant damage to the reproductive system.
Genital herpes A sexually transmitted disease caused by a viral infection of the herpes simplex virus Types I and II. The virus can attack different areas of the body, but commonly causes blisters on the genitals.
Genital warts A sexually transmitted disease caused by a viral infection.
Gonorrhea Sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacterial infection.
Herbal medicine Unconventional system that uses herbs to treat ailments and disease.
Homeopathy System of treatment based on the use of minute quantities of remedies that in large amounts produce effects similar to the disease being treated.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) Virus that leads to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Monogamous A sexual relationship in which two people have sexual relations only with each other.
Opportunistic diseases Diseases that arise in the absence of a healthy immune system, which would fight them off in healthy people.
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) An overall designation referring to the effects of other STDs, primarily chlamydia and gonorrhea.
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) Communicable diseases spread through sexual contact.
Syphilis A sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacterial infection.
