Using Skinfold Calipers

What is a Caliper?

A Skinfold Caliper is a device which measures the thickness of a fold of skin with its underlying layer of fat. By doing this at key locations, shown by research to be representative of the total amount of fat on the body, it is possible to estimate the total percent bodyfat of a person.

Correct body weight varies with each individual. We all have different amounts of bone, organ and muscle. Few changes can be made in those areas. Muscle weight will increase as you become physically fit. However, reducing muscle weight in order to achieve the "thin" look can be dangerous.

An effective weight control plan should be designed to bring body fat to acceptable levels. Body fat measurement is the best way to determine your ideal weight.

Tips on Measuring

bulletTake all measurements on the right side of your body
bulletCarefully identify and recall your measuring site for accuracy
bulletTake the measurement when skin is dry and lotion-free
bulletDo not measure immediately after exercise due to shifts in body fluid
