Donna Woolard is a professor of Exercise Science and director of the Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) Program at Campbell University.  A native of Washington, NC, Woolard joined the faculty of Campbell University in 1994. Under her direction, the Physical Education Teacher Education program at Campbell has been cited as "exemplary" by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).  Recognized as an expert in the professional preparation of physical education teachers, Woolard has been personally cited as an "exemplary" teacher educator by NCATE and NCDPI.  Dr. Woolard has been named to Who’s Who in the South and Southeast, Who’s Who in American Education, and Who’s Who in the World.

In May of 1998, Dr. Woolard was named Teacher of the Year by the Campbell University College of Arts and Sciences.  In December of 2000, Dr. Woolard was declared College and University Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the Physical Education Association of the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.  Most recently, the NCAAHPERD honored her with the 2003 Service Award.

The National Association for Sport and Physical Education's Council for Professional Preparation in Physical Education invited her to conduct a half-day workshop on the Physical Education Praxis Exams at the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) 2001 National Convention in Cincinnati.  The workshop was presented in collaboration with Scott Hawkinson, Physical Education Test Development Project Manager for the Educational Testing Service (ETS).  For the 2002 convention, Woolard and Hawkinson teamed up with Bruce Peragallo, a Developer/Facilitator for the National Board Physical Education Exams, to present "The Praxis Physical Education Exams - How Questions Are Developed." In November of 2002, Dr. Woolard was a featured speaker at the Kentucky and Missouri AHPERD conventions. On both occasions, her topic was preparing students for the Praxis Physical Education Exams.

Recently, Dr Woolard helped ETS develop test preparation materials for the Physical Education Content Knowledge test and wrote the "Expert Advice" chapter in ETS's new Diagnostic Preparation Package for Physical Education. In the summer of 2003, Woolard served as an Outside Consultant to ETS writing and reviewing test questions for the Praxis Physical Education Content Knowledge Exam.

Donna Woolard is also a leader in instructional technology. She has made numerous presentations at the state and national levels on using technology to aid student learning. She is an accomplished webmaster and is noted for making instructional interactive websites.

Dr. Woolard received her bachelors and masters degrees from East Carolina University. She began her career as a high school teacher and coach in Ahoskie, North Carolina.  Dr. Woolard left eastern North Carolina to pursue her doctorate at Middle Tennessee State University and returned to the state after completing the degree in two years.  Her career in higher education began as an Assistant Professor at Mars Hill College and Elizabeth City State University.

Campbell's Department of Exercise Science

The Department of Exercise Science operates under the auspices of the College of Arts and Sciences. The Physical Education Teacher Education Program is administered jointly by the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education. The Physical Education Teacher Education Program at Campbell University has been cited as being "Exemplary" by the Public Schools of North Carolina's Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). Besides, Dr Woolard, other department faculty include Dr. William Freeman, the department chair and a prolific presenter and author, and Dr. Brian Bergemann, the department exercise scientist.
